Producer/vocalist AGF (Antye Greie-Fuchs) and Berlin underground veteran Gudrun Gut have just cemented plans for their debut album as Greie Gut Fraktion: Baustelle (“Construction Site”) will arrive the 18th of June via Gut’s label Monika Enterprise and will be preceded by the single “Wir bauen eine neue Stadt” (“We’re building a new city”). The track is a cold yet shimmering bilingual reinterpretation of the song by early-80s NDW band Palais Schaumberg (which notably included Holger Hiller, Thomas Fehlmann and Moritz von Oswald among its members and was produced by Flying Lizards’ David Cunningham).

The maxi 12″ arrives on the 21st of May and starts off with a remix from sound sculptor Alva Noto, followed by a radio edit of the album version. The real draw for techno nerds will be the B-side dominated by Kompakt’s Wolfgang Voigt, resurrecting his Freiland moniker for two different piano-led versions. One has a Teutonic 4/4 and the other schaffel; both are decent but perhaps not on par with the vigor of G&G’s version (streaming at their MySpace), especially considering Voigt’s previous accomplishments.

Following the duo’s Berlin debut in March and their London appearance last weekend, Baustelle promises an alternative definition of the term “industrial music”, assembled largely from field recordings taken at construction sites. If those performances are any indication, the rest of the album should have a more abstract, less poppy feel than the lead single. Check Popkontext for more photos from their Berlin show.
