Kim Ann Foxman and Dominique Young Unique headline Revolution № 5
Revolution № 5, an ongoing party series from Berlin’s Sick Girls, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this weekend at Stattbad, a cavernous cultural center (converted from an old bathhouse/pool complex) and a good fit for the DJ duo’s bass-heavy hi-jinx. And to celebrate, they’ve invited a crew of guests to help bring the noise.
NYC’s Kim Ann Foxman (co-vocalist of Hercules And Love Affair, whose new album is set for September) will DJ, and if her recent set streaming at WNYU is any indicator, expect her to fag it up with a lot of classic house tracks.
Also appearing, for the first time in Berlin, is 19-year-old Florida-based party rapper Dominique Young Unique. Check out the vid of her performance at this year’s SXSW Festival, plus a few questions she answered about her ass, her upcoming mixtape and her impression of Europe. The complete lineup for Revolution № 5 follows at the end.
Expatriarch: Hearing you rap, from the start, it’s obvious you’ve got some legit talent. So when you use sex appeal in a song like “Show my Ass”, how can you be sure that your body parts won’t overshadow your skill?
Dominique: “Show My Ass” is just another catch phrase for saying something like “I’m gonna do my thing”, that doesn’t really mean the actual body part — it’s equal to saying that Dominique Young Unique is doing her thing — that’s what it is.
Your new mixtape is called Domination. Obviously that was chosen because of the word’s similarity to your name, but I was wondering, what does the word mean to you?
Yeah, the mixtape name plays with my name Dominique, but for me also means that I want the mixtape to be heard in all the nations around the world.
You say you love club music. Berlin’s predominant music style, techno, must be different from what you’re used to in Tampa, but do you plan on checking out any clubs while you’re here? Anything else you plan to check out in the city, or Europe in general?
Yeah, I like club music, and I want to check out new music and stuff I’ve never seen before. I like experiencing the different cultures here in Europe. London is my second home now. This is the second time I’ve been here and I love it. I am looking forward to hitting Berlin!
