Electro-rocker Peaches has enlisted the help of musician Simonne Jones to record “Free Pussy Riot”, a song raising awareness of the hooliganism charges (and “patriarchal bullshit”) brought against three jailed members of the Russian protest band whose verdict is due this Friday, August 17. The song’s release continues the international attention on Pussy Riot, following public statements from Madonna and Björk at their recent shows. Along with the accompanying music video — shot last week in Berlin and augmented by clips sent in by international supporters — and free mp3, Peaches is urging everyone to sign the Change.org petition and get involved via freepussyriot.org.

In the official statement, Peaches says, “As a musician who has spoken out against political figures, I am deeply troubled that the Russian government is punishing its citizens for voicing their opinions through music. Music is an essential tool for voicing opinions about everything from gender to oppression. To outlaw the free expression of these ideas is to embrace tyranny.” Simonne Jones offered further remarks to Moscow News: ”What happened in Russia could happen anywhere. We could not keep quiet – the world is globalizing, and expression of the dictatorship in one country affects all of us.”

Pitchfork reports that the video features appearances from “the Knife, Lyyke Li, Peter Bjorn & John, the Hives, Margaret Cho, Miike Snow, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Le Tigre/MEN’s JD Samson, Kate Nash, Cheap Trick’s Bun E. Carlos, the MC5′s Wayne Kramer, Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, Light Asylum, and more” — you might also catch a glimpse of our own Dickey Doo and Joey Hansom.

Peaches’ next move is the single “Burst” for Boys Noize Records, accompanied by remixes from Planningtorock, UZ and Bart B More, the last of which can be heard in Boys Noize’s new mix recorded for Diplo & Friends on BBC Radio1 — check around the 40-minute mark.
